Why Swimming Is Great for Older and Less Active Dogs

Swimming lets dogs move freely while the water supports their weight. That makes it a gentle way to exercise for dogs who find long walks or rough play harder than they used to. At Soggie Doggie, every session is private, the pool is heated and indoors, and your dog moves at their own pace.

Senior Dogs

Keep an older dog moving, maintain muscle and enjoy time together in warm water. Life jackets are available, and we may recommend one for older dogs who need extra support.

Weight Management

Swimming burns energy without the pounding of running, so it can be a helpful part of a weight-loss plan for overweight dogs.

Mobility & Conditioning

Regular swims help dogs build confidence, conditioning and range of motion. Sport dogs use the pool to stay in shape between events, too.

Dogs Under Veterinary Care

If your dog is recovering from surgery or being treated for a medical condition, we may ask for a signed Veterinary Release Form and follow any limits your vet sets on swim length or activity.

Choosing the Right Session

$135

Coach-Assisted Sessions

Three private, 30-minute instructed sessions. The right fit for a dog that loves the water but lacks confidence, or has had a less-than-perfect first experience with swimming and needs a gentler introduction to the water.

From $30

Private Swims

Once your dog passes the Safety Swim Assessment, book private 30, 45 or 60-minute swims ($30, $45 or $55). Just you, your dog and the pool.

Multi-swim discount packages are available for dogs that have passed their assessment. See Services & Pricing for details.

Always talk with your veterinarian about what’s right for your dog, especially after surgery or an injury.

What to Expect on Your First Visit

  • Safety Swim Assessment first. Every dog starts with an assessment so we can see their comfort level and how safely they can enter and exit the pool using the ramp.
  • No pressure. We will never force, drag or throw a dog into the pool. Some dogs need more than one visit to feel comfortable.
  • Bring the essentials. Your completed Welcome Packet forms, current vaccination records, towels and a leash no longer than six feet.
  • Skip the meal. Please don’t feed your dog for at least four hours before swimming.

Common Questions

Is swimming good for senior dogs?

Many older dogs enjoy swimming because the water supports their weight while they move. It’s a gentle way to stay active. Talk with your veterinarian about your own dog’s health before starting.

Do I need a note from my vet?

A Veterinary Release Form is included in the Welcome Packet. It’s required when requested by Soggie Doggie, such as for dogs currently under veterinary care for a medical or surgical condition.

Is the pool heated?

Yes. Our indoor pool is heated so dogs can swim comfortably all year, including the winter months.

Will my dog wear a life jacket?

Life jackets are available. We may recommend one for older dogs, beginners or dogs that need additional support.

Is this the same as veterinary rehabilitation?

No. Soggie Doggie offers swimming for exercise and conditioning. We’re happy to follow any guidance your veterinarian provides.
